Rana draytonii is a moderate to large (1.7–5.5 in), with a brown, grey, olive, or reddish back. It breeds in ponds, wetlands, and slow-moving streams.

Destruction of critical habitat has eliminated the frogs from more than 70% of their historic range, and is now only found in about 256 streams or drainages in California.
